OUR WHY

Black families in the Dallas–Fort Worth area deserve culturally competent, affirming, and community-rooted care throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Yet, many still face barriers when trying to find providers who understand their lived experiences—not just medically, but emotionally and culturally.

The DFW Black Birthworkers Directory was created to change that.

Founded by Andrea Carter, LM, CPM, this directory is a vision brought to life—a tool designed to connect Black families with Black birth professionals across the metroplex. From doulas and midwives to lactation consultants and childbirth educators, this space exists to make sure families can find providers who look like them, understand them, and advocate for them.

Black maternal and infant health disparities remain a serious issue—even in a region as large and diverse as DFW. Research consistently shows that culturally concordant care improves communication, builds trust, and leads to better health outcomes. This directory exists to help make that kind of care not just accessible—but expected.

This is more than a resource—it’s a village.

The DFW Black Birthworkers Directory is about visibility, access, and empowerment. It’s about reclaiming the sacredness of Black birth and ensuring that every family is seen, heard, and supported—by people who truly understand.
